About Me

Hi, I’m James 👋

I’m a Staff Engineer at Coiled. At Coiled I focus on helping data scientists / data engineers / ML engineers deploy and scale their workloads on cloud hardware. I do this through a combination of engineering, solution architecture, customer support, and evangelism.

Prior to that, I was a Software Engineer at Quansight, where I collaborated with customers to scale data analysis workflows on distributed platforms. I also worked on several projects in the PyData ecosystem (Dask, Numba, Zarr).

Prior to that, I was a graduate researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I received my PhD in experimental astrophysics as a member of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.

A large portion of my professional life has focused on the open source Python data ecosystem. In particular, I’m a core maintainer of Dask, a library for scalable computing, and contribute to other projects like Zarr, Numba, Xarray, and more.

I also frequently talk at conferences and meetups.
